Kenmore

Kenmore - Loch TayKenmore is a beautiful village situated at the eastern side of Loch Tay. It is a popular holiday location for touring Perthshire, walking, sailing, white water rafting or catching up on some local history. It lies six miles west of Aberfeldy.

It was the 3rd Earl of Breadalbane who built the handsome bridge over the River Tay in 1774, with the equivocal inscription proclaiming the great generosity of King George who subscribed a large sum towards the cost out of the fortified Jacobite estates. It was the view from this bridge which inspired Robert Burns to write his poem, in pencil, on the chimney-piece of the Kenmore Inn, now the Hotel, part of which runs:

The Tay meand'ring sweet in infant pride,
the palace rising on its verdant side,
The lawns wood-fring'd in Nature's native task,
the hillocks dropt in Nature's careless haste,
The arches striding o'er the newborn stream,
the village glist'ning in the noontide beam

Scottish Crannog CentreJust along from Kenmore on the south bank of Loch Tay is the Scottish Crannog Centre which gives an insight into the past inhabitants of the area.

At one end of Kenmore is the village church with its elegant clock-tower, at the other the spectacular arched entrance to Taymouth Castle. The castle dates to the early 1800s, when it was built by the Campbells of Glenorchy as the family seat. It is currently in the process of being transfromed into a 6 star hotel.
