Blair Atholl Watermill

Watermill - Blair AthollThis is a terrific attraction in the peaceful town of Blair Atholl. This an actual working mill which is driven by a large, lade fed waterwheel and the resulting stone milled flour is used to bake their own bread. There has been a mill on this site since 1613 and it is the only working mill left from dozens which once worked this area.

The mill played a central role within the local community until 1929 when, along with many of the other small country mills, it was forced to close as it could not compete with the larger mills who were able to take advantage of improvements in the transport network.

Watermill - Blair AthollThe Blair Atholl Watermill was lovingly restored in 1977 with the help of the memories of many local people who had worked the mill till it closed.

The mill is fed by the River Tilt which drives two pairs of French burr stones which are used today to mill oatmeal and wholemeal flours.

People can now see for themselves and meet the Miller who will talk you through this traditional process and guide you to our tea-room where you can taste the delicious results.

And don't forget to buy some oatmeal or flour to take home!
