Scottish Folk Bands and Singers

Aberfeldy & District Gaelic Choir - from Aberfeldy in the heart of beautiful Highland Perthshire comes the county's sole Gaelic choir.

Aly Bain - Scotland's supreme traditional style fiddler.

Battlefield Band - fusion of ancient and modern instruments - bagpipes, fiddle, synthesiser, guitar, flutes, bodhran and accordion.

Beggars Row - fantastic live performance Scottish Folk band. The band roam around on and off stage as part of a highly energetic performance.

Blazin Fiddles - five of the hottest young contemporary fiddle players from the various regions of the highlands and islands of Scotland.

Bohola - although they play mainly Irish folk music, the feeling, passion and style is so similar to Scottish folk music. They are also such a superb band that they are a must to have in your collection.

Boys of the Lough - the first of the full-time professional Celtic bands to arise on the international scene.

Capercaillie - Gaelic musical vocals with an astonishing musical dexterity of the various fiddle, whistle, flute, pipe and accordian.

Celtic Horizon - entertaining band consisting of Bob and Neil, formed in 2000. They perform Scots songs, Irish Songs, traditional folk songs and contemporary Celtic music folk songs and many written by themselves.

Corries - The Corries, namely Ronnie Browne and Roy Williamson, were a dynamic Scottish folk singing duo who, for more then thirty years, combined a unique blend of instruments and songs

Cross Border Band - The Cross Border Band, play a mix of contemporary and traditional music, much of which is written by Erne and arranged by the band. The band consists of Linsey Aitken, Mike Simons and Erne Parkin.

Dick Gaughan - with his very unique voice this well known singer has been in the Scottish Folk scene since the 1970's.

Donnie Munro - previously lead singer with Runrig, now solo artist, with a distinctive range of vocals.

Dougie MacLean - Dougie MacLean is one of the foremost folk musicians and singer/songwriters in Scotland.

Douglas Craik - Douglas Craik is a well known name on the folk music circuit in Scotland. The wealth of experience and knowledge Douglas has gained over his many years on the folk scene has helped him recently achieve a position as a National Director of the Traditional Music & Song Association of Scotland.

Duncan McCrone - Glasgow born singer and songwriter, his most famous composition being 'Always Argyll'. He also spent 18 years with the well known Clydesiders.

Ed Miller - Ed Miller has been hailed as "one of the finest singers to come out of the Scottish Folksong Revival" and as "one of Scotland's best singing exports."

Eilidh Grant - Eilidh loves to sing Scottish traditional songs - and is especially fond of those of Robert Burns, but her feel for and interpretation of lyrics shows when she switches to a more contemporary style.

Gaberlunzie - Robin Watson and Gordon Menzies have been together as Gaberlunzie since the early 1970s and are well known for producing an exciting blend of modern and traditional Scottish folk songs.

Jayne Sarah - her growing reputation as a talented vocalist and entertainer was enhanced through opening spots for Old Blind Dogs in Comrie in December 2006 and Rallion at the Star Folk Club in February 2007 along with a performance on the Celtic Connections Danny Kyle Open Stage in January 2007 and several more performances at various folk clubs.

Jim Malcolm - Jim Malcolm was brought up in Perthshire and Angus and was steeped in the traditional music of Scotland from an early age. He learned to play guitar while at school and by his early twenties was winning songwriting competitions and playing in folk clubs all over Scotland. In January 1999 Jim joined one of Scotland's most popular international folk acts, the Old Blind Dogs from north east Scotland.

Karen Matheson - widely recognised as the haunting vocals of Celtic super-group Capercaillie, described by Sean Connery as having "a throat that is surely touched by God".

Lauren MacColl - fiddle led, with the driving combination of piano and guitar, The Lauren MacColl Trio take you on a musical journey from rousing Highland strathspeys and reels, to emotive Gaelic airs.

Linda Dewar - her rich voice, distinctive guitar styling, and engaging stage presence have made her a popular and familiar favourite among fans at ceilidhs, Burns nights and festivals as well as the more intimate environments of pubs and house concerts throughout the western states of America. Linda has just recently moved to the cooler climates of Highland Perthshire, Scotland.

McCalmans - the McCalmans, or the Macs as they are affectionately known, have been performing for over forty years and are Scotland's most well-kent folk trio.

North Sea Gas - North Sea Gas have now been performing for 27 years, during which time they have enjoyed great acclaim for their high standards of professionalism. Over the years their exciting blend of Scottish and Irish music has appealed to audiences all over Great Britain, Europe, Scandinavia, Australia, Canada and the United States. For nine consecutive years, North Sea Gas has attracted large audiences to concerts held during the Edinburgh Festival.

Old Blind Dogs - over the years Old Blind Dogs have evolved and grown into one of Scotland's favourite folk bands.

Pete Clark - one of Perthshire and Scotland's top fiddlers. Pete runs a regular fiddle class on Thursday nights at the Taybank in Dunkeld and a 5-day fiddle school in September (The Dunkeld Bridge Fiddle Week).

Phil Cunningham - widely regarded as one of the most exciting and innovative accordion players of the times.

Rallion - Rallion are a four piece traditional folk group, hailing from Edinburgh and Glasgow. The current line-up is Marieke McBean (vocals, bodhran, djembe, guitar), Stevie Lawrence (guitar, bouzouki), Andrew Lyons (fiddle, cittern) and Fiona Cuthill (fiddle, whistles, recorder). Rallion has been playing together since early 2003.

Red Hot Chilli Pipers - Bagpipes with attitude. Drums with a Scottish accent. A blazing rock band and a show so hot it carries its own health warning. The Red Hot Chilli Pipers have been rocking the world from New York to Beijing with musicianship of the highest order and a passion for pipes that will leave you breathless.

Runrig - Runrig is a six-piece band, originating mostly from the Western Isles of Scotland, who perform a mixture of Gaelic and English-spoken songs, almost all of which are written by the band.

Silly Wizard - Scottish folk band originated in the 70's and became well known both here and throughout Europe.

Skerryvore - Skerryvore are a 6 piece traditional band based in Glasgow, Scotland. An all male band, they have been dubbed the ‘boy band’ of traditional Scottish music. The roots of the band come from the West Coast of Scotland and in particular the tiny Island of Tiree, in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland.

Sligo Rags - the addition of bluegrass-style flat-picking and world music rhythms to these time-honored songs creates a unique brand of Irish music that these bandmates are eager to share with . . . well, anyone who will listen.

Stephen Quigg has established himself as one of the most popular folk singers in Britain today. In 2001 Stephen joined the internationally acclaimed McCalmans, and has become a popular addition to the band.

Tannahill Weavers - The Tannahill Weavers are one of Scotland's premier traditional bands. Their diverse repertoire spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, and original ballads and lullabies. Serious bagpipe playing.

Tattie Jam - a relatively new duo, comprising Seylan Baxter and Ruaridh Pringle, with a refreshing new energetic sound. They take the traditional and give it a successful twist giving outstanding results. Add to this the collection of new material, mostly written by Ruaridh, and you have an highly entertaining sound.

The Outside Track - With a truly diverse line-up, from Scotland, England, Ireland and Canada, the band combine music from all their different cultures to form a distinct and dynamic musical sound.

Wolfstone - best described by the man who founded it all, Duncan Chisholm “At the end of the day we are a rock band from the Highlands of Scotland that happen to use pipes, whistles and fiddles in our repertoire”.
